Batting first after winning the toss, Mumbai Indians got off to horrendous start, losing three wickets for just 54 runs. Kolkata would feel relatively better after getting rid of dangerous Jayasuriya and explosive Sachin Tendulkar out. Harbhajan Singh who came after the fall of Jayasuriya could not do much and was dismissed for 6 runs after facing seven deliveries.

Mumbai Indians captain Sachin Tendulkar called right at the toss and decided to take first strike against a Kolkata Knight Riders side, languishing at the bottom of the points table.
