Ponting retired fron Twenty20

Australia captain Ricky Ponting retired from Twenty20 international cricket to enhance his bid to make the 2013 Ashes.
Ponting came to his decision during a fortnight break from the tour of England with one last crack at a Test series over here at the forefront of his mind. Twice he has overseen Ashes defeats on English soil and he maintains a determination to address the statistic.
Upon departing for some time off with his family Down Under, he first referenced his desire to participate once more even though he will be 38, and he reaffirmed: “I was serious about it at the time. Having returned from England with the taste in my mouth that I had, I was very keen to be able to try and give it every possible crack to be back there again. This decision now is certainly part of giving myself the best chance to achieve that.”
He added: “As long as I’m playing well, and as long as I’m enjoying the game, then I’ve never put a limit on how long I can play the game for.
“I’m really passionate and committed to being the best player that I can be for Australia for as long as possible.
“Over the last couple of years I’ve found it increasing difficult to play all three forms of the game at the level that I want to play them.
“Looking at international Twenty20 cricket, I’ve looked at the program for the next couple of years. In the next 12 months alone, I’ve looked at having probably an extra four weeks off which will give me an opportunity to get away and just make sure that I’m ready to go for both the Test matches and the one-day cricket we have in that period.
“You look at even how I started this latest Ashes series, going in nice and fresh and making a hundred in the first game and almost going downhill during the series. I want to make sure that doesn’t occur for the rest of my career.
“I want to be as fresh as I possibly can for every one-day game or Test I play for the rest of my career and I think having the extra few weeks at home will give me a better chance to do that.”

Australian Captain Ricky Ponting retired fron Twenty20 Internationals. Still he will be available for the One Day Internationals and test matches.

Ponting said that “I’m really passionate and committed to being the best player that I can be for Australia for as long as possible.”

T20 World Cup 2009: Australian Squad Announced – Lee, Symonds back

May 07, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Champions Trophy 2009 No Comments →

Cricket Australia on Tuesday named injured pacer Brett Lee and all-rounder Andrew Symonds in its 15-member squad for next month’s ICC World Twenty20.

Talking about Lee’s inclusion in the squad, Cricket Australia’s chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said, “Brett Lee is progressing well and will return to international cricket in Thursday’s Twenty20 game against Pakistan.

“We expect it will take him a few games to regain his rhythm after the extended break but the medical and coaching staff are very confident Brett will be back to his best for this tournament,” he said.

Lee has been out of action after sustaining a foot and ankle injury against South Africa last December.

Symonds had an indifferent form with the bat ever since returning to the national side for the one-day series against Pakistan but Hilditch showed lot of trust in the all-rounder’s ability.

“At his best Andrew Symonds is one of the best Twenty20 players in the world. In limited opportunities in the UAE he showed, during game two, his ability to win games for Australia. He also adds versatility to our squad,” Hilditch said.

The side also includes all-rounder Shane Watson and hard-hitting batsmen David Hussey and youngster David Warner. The bowling line-up is also pretty impressive with Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Bracken and Peter Siddle giving Lee company.

Ricky Ponting will lead the side with Michael Clarke named vice-captain.

Team: Ricky Ponting (captain), Michael Clarke (vice-captain), Nathan Bracken, Brad Haddin, Nathan Hauritz, Ben Hilfenhaus, James Hopes, David Hussey, Mike Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee, Peter Siddle, Andrew Symonds, David Warner, Shane Watson.

Gilchrist feels younger playing IPL

April 20, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Player News No Comments →

Gilchrist might have dropped the curtains of his international career more than a year back, but this Deccan Chargers skipper said he still feels like a teenager who can’t wait for the cricket season to start.

The former Australian wicket-keeper batsman, who bid adieu to his international career in January last year, said he didn’t play much competitive cricket after the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League and was nervous ahead of their opening encounter against Kolkata Knight Riders which they comprehensively won by eight wickets last night.

“When I was a 14-year-old we had one season off and used to wait for another season to play cricket,” he said.

Apart from lauding his team-mates for the victory, Gilchrist also showered praise on coach and fellow Australian Darren Lehman, saying the left-hander had played a key role in reviving the fortunes of the Hyderabad outfit who finished at the bottom of the IPL table last year.

The 37-year-old dashing Aussie feels his predecessor in Deccan Chargers team, VVS Laxman will have a major role to play in difficult South Africa turfs.

“He is an experienced campaigner. We all know about his achievements in Test cricket. The pitches here will suit Laxman’s style of play. He likes the ball coming onto the bat and loves playing those elegant shots while taking his own time,” Gilchrist said.

Tait banned from playing in IPL 2

April 18, 2009 By: Spunky Category: IPL 2010 - IPL 3 No Comments →

Cricket Australia has refused to allow fast bowler Shaun Tait to play in the Indian Premier League because of fitness concerns.

The 26-year-old was due to play for Shane Warne’s Rajasthan Royals, the defending champions, in Saturday’s first game against Bangalore.

But Australian officials were concerned he had not recovered from a hamstring injury sustained two months ago.

“He’s still working through the rehab programme,” spokesman Peter Young said.

Tait is the latest in a series of Australians to withdraw from the lucrative tournament, which is being staged in South Africa this year because of security concerns.

Shane Watson, IPL Player of the Season last year, will instead be part of Australia’s squad for a series against Pakistan in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, along with fellow all-rounder Andrew Symonds.

Brett Lee, meanwhile, is recovering from injury and skipper Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey have decided to rest ahead of this summer’s ICC World Twenty 20 and Ashes series in England.
