Modi said IPL will be expanded to 10 Teams by 2011

May 25, 2009 By: Spunky Category: IPL 2010 - IPL 3 No Comments →

Lalit Modi, the Chairman and Commissioner of the Indian Premier League said the eight-team tournament will be expanded to 10 teams in 2011.

Mr. Modi also said the IPL will be back in India next year and the cramped International Cricket Council (ICC) schedule does not leave any room for the possibility of a second IPL in a calendar year in 2010.

“We have been missing India but we have made a strong fan base in South Africa. We have a tight schedule next year. But we will have two more teams in the league from 2011,” said Modi.

Modi, who is also the vice-president of the BCCI, said that organising the IPL in South Africa was a great experience.

“We had a great time in South Africa. Everything was perfect. I am satisfied with the way the tournament was successfully conducted here at such a short time,” he said.

No World Cup in Pakistan – ICC

April 18, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Cricket News No Comments →

International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday said Pakistan would not host 2011 World Cup matches because of security concerns.

After ICC’s announcement Pakistan’s future as an international cricket destination hits a dead end just two years before the World Cup is to be played in the sub-continent.

The decision to strip Pakistan of World Cup hosting rights has been taken 44 days after the attack on Sri Lanka’s cricketers outside the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore by a group of heavily armed terrorists.

“It is a regrettable decision but our number one priority is to create certainty and deliver a safe, secure and successful event. However, the uncertainty created by events within Pakistan created a huge question mark over our ability to do just that. By making this decision now we hope we can put a great deal of any uncertainty to one side and press on with our preparations which, given this is cricket’s biggest and most high profile event within our range of tournaments, are substantial,” said ICC President David Morgan.

Aussies Slip to 3rd place

April 15, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Cricket News No Comments →

The World Cup champions Australia slipped to third place in the one-day rankings on Wednesday, their lowest since the International Cricket Council (ICC) introduced ratings in October 2002.

On Monday Australia collapsed to their seventh defeat in nine matches against top-ranked South Africa this year and now lies third in the rankings behind India.

However, Australia will climb back to second if they win the last match in Johannesburg on Friday.

South Africa won Monday’s fourth game by 61 runs to clinch the five-match series 3-1 with a match to spare.

Australia held the top spot for all but 10 months of the duration, including 52 straight months from October 2002 to January 2007, ICC said in a statement.

Laxman, Gambir on top 20

March 31, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Cricket News No Comments →

Indian batsman VVS Laxman returned to the top-20 of the ICC Rankings, up six places to 15th in the latest list, after playing on the match-saving hundred against the Kiwis in second test at Napier.

In the rankings for Test bowlers, Indian pacer Ishant Sharma’s 3-95 in the drawn match helped him leapfrog Jacques Kallis of South Africa, Pakistan’s Danish Kaneria and England’s Monty Panesar to a career-best 17th spot.

After his excellent performances with the bat, Laxman jumped six places to put himself in 15th position, just behind Sachin Tendulkar, who contributed 49 and 64 in the match, the ICC said in a statement.

Opener Gautam Gambhir was the highest-ranked India batsman in fifth place and his knock of 137 in the second innings has not only strengthened his current position but has put him within striking distance of fourth-placed Mahela Jayawardene of Sri Lanka.

Bucknor Retires

March 24, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Cricket News No Comments →

The 62-year-old Jamaican, who stood in a record 128 Tests, ended his 20-year career with the final Test between South Africa and Australia at Newlands in Cape Town.

“His endurance is testament to discipline and consistency – two characteristics to which all in cricket should aspire,” said Haroon Lorgat, the ICC’s chief executive.

“On behalf of the ICC, thank you for your great service to the game and we wish you well in the future.”

One of the game’s most respected umpires, Bucknor has also stood in 179 one-day internationals and will add to that tally when he officiates the two matches between West Indies and England at Kensington Oval in Barbados this weekend.

The experienced Bucknor has also stood in a record five consecutive World Cup finals since 1992, a standard that Lorgat contended would never be overhauled.

“His record of five consecutive ICC Cricket World Cup finals will not, be overtaken and he will retire as the umpire to have officiated in the most Test matches and the first to break the 100-Test mark.”
