DLF IPL 2 – Finals – A Journey from Bottom to Top for Deccan Chargers

May 25, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Highlights, IPL 2010 - IPL 3 No Comments →

Deccan Chargers completed an extraordinary journey from being at the bottom of the table last year to win the second edition of the Indian Premier League, defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore by six runs in a exciting final at the New Wanderers on Sunday.

There was no lack of excitement and heartbreak in the title clash as the 37-day, 59 match tournament ended with a fitting finale between last year’s bottom two sides.

Royal Challengers captain Anil Kumble used his guile and experience to claim four wickets and restrict the formidable Chargers to 143 after winning the toss. Herschelle Gibbs top-scored for Chargers with an unbeaten 53 while Andrew Symonds contributed 33.

The Challengers, who were coming on the back of five successive wins, were never on the top of the chase and lost wickets at regular intervals. They lost five wickets in the last six overs and finished at 137-9.

Andrew Symonds (3-18), Pragyan Ojha (3-28) and Harmeet Singh (2-23) all chipped in with the ball.

Ross Taylor (27) held the Bangalore innings together at a difficult time, but two successive blows by Symonds tilted the scales in the Chargers favour. Challengers needed 45 off 36 balls at that stage.

Taylor holed out to Venugopal Rao in the deep and Virat Kohli was out to a brilliant piece of stumping by Gilchrist. Harmeet Singh, in the next over took out Mark Boucher, who gave a straight catch to Gibbs at point.

Robin Uthappa (17) kept the team in the hunt and Challengers needed 27 off the last two overs. Uthappa and Vinay Kumar took 12 runs off the first five balls of Ryan Harris, before the latter was out to a brilliant catch by Harmeet at long leg.

RP Singh kept his nerve in the last over and Uthappa could hit only one four off the fifth ball, but it was all over for Chargers by then.

Earlier, Challengers’ in-form opening pair of Manish Pandey (4) and Jacques Kallis (16) got out without making much on the scoreboard.

Kallis hit Ryan Harris for two fours before dragging a RP Singh delivery onto the stumps.

Van der Merwe (32) meant business straightway, hitting Harris for two sixes but Ojha, who has been in impressive form through out the tournament dismissed Pandey and Merwe.

Taylor and Dravid looked to build a partnership by adding 22 runs, but Dravid went for a paddle shot and was bowled by Harmeet Singh.

Earlier, Challengers were off to a great start as Kumble, opening the attack, bowled for a duck the dangerous Andrew Gilchrist, who had single-handedly crushed Delhi Daredevils in the semifinals.

Suman fell to a good running catch by Pandey off Vinay Kumar in the fourth over. Symonds was dropped on five by Rahul Dravid in the slips, but could not do much and became Kumble’s second victim.

Gibbs smashed three boundaries and two sixes in 48 balls while Symonds faced 21 balls and cracked four boundaries and a six. The pair shared a third wicket stand of 40 runs to bring the Chargers back on track.

Kumble removed Rohit Sharma for 24 and Venugopal Rao for a duck in the 17th over.

IPL 2 – Semi-Final 2-Chennai Super Kings Vs Royal Challengers

May 23, 2009 By: Spunky Category: IPL 2010 - IPL 3 No Comments →

This second semi-final is a sign of how healthy and competitive this IPL has been and in this second semi-final, we don’t have a clear favourite. There really is little separating Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore, primarily due to how well Bangalore have rallied in the second half of the tournament.

At the halfway stage of this year’s tournament Bangalore looked to have fallen upon their besieged ways of 2008, with just two wins from seven games. In the same timeframe Chennai had won three of seven, with one match washed out. They then went on to win five in a row, prompting many to declare them surefire semi-finalists. Then they were halted by Bangalore in Durban, a thrilling match that turned around Bangalore’s fortunes. Chennai have both sputtered and smacked in recent matches, on the one hand being beaten by Kolkata Knight Riders after posting 188 yet bouncing back to clinch a low-scoring thriller over Kings XI Punjab. Bangalore have won four in a row and can rightfully stare Chennai in the eye.

Past IPL form, though, may count for little during the hazards of a knock-out match and the fight could be decided by which team keeps its cool. Chennai have the practiced wiles of Muttiah Muralitharan, coming off a tremendous Man-of-the-Match game, and Matthew Hayden. Chennai’s Indian players have performed better than Bangalore’s – Suresh Raina is second to Hayden in runs scored, MS Dhoni has been consistent, the bowlers have all contributed – and on that level Chennai hold an advantage.

IPL 2-Chennai Vs Bangalore

Bangalore will rely heavily on Anil Kumble, and hope that Jacques Kallis recovers from a hamstring strain picked up in their last match. While one pair of Bangalore openers are yet to click together, the side have been handed a massive boost by young Manish Pandey’s century in the last round-robin match. Ross Taylor and Mark Boucher offer power-hitting down the order. Praveen Kumar is always a threat with his subtle changes of pace with the new ball, Kumble is always there with the ball, and Roelof van der Merwe can be relied on to keep it tight.

At this stage last year, Chennai found themselves up against overwhelming favourites Punjab, but knocked them aside to make the final. Bangalore, conversely, finished last year second from bottom on the points table. Call it the south Indian Ashes, if you like, for back on the domestic circuit these two state sides enjoy a storied history.

Royal Challengers Vs Deccan Chargers: Manish Pandey’s century helps Bangalore win

Manish Pandey plundered a spectacular 114 not out against the Deccan Chargers as the Royal Challengers Bangalore won their fourth successive game to reach the semi-finals where they will clash with MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings on Saturday. Pandey smashed 10 boundaries and four sixes in only 73 balls to become the first Indian to hit a ton in the IPL. Chasing 171, the Deccan Chargers fell short by 12 runs after Herschelle Gibbs clobbered a 43-ball 60. Deccan will play against Delhi on Friday.

Delhi Daredevils Vs Mumbai Indians: Sehwag back in form

May 22, 2009 By: Spunky Category: IPL 2010 - IPL 3 No Comments →

Team Delhi are really looking unbeatable. The clouds of doubts over skipper Virender Sehwag’s form and fitness cleared out on Thursday as his team thrashed Mumbai Indians to finish on a high ahead of the semis.

A target of 165 and all eyes were on Sehwag (50 off 27 balls) as he walked in to bat at No. 3.

But there was absolutely nothing in his batting that showed that he was going through a bad patch. The ball kept hitting the middle of the bat right from the word go and Sehwag looked like the player we all know.

With the Mumbai Indians pacemen unable to extract lateral movement, it was just a case of stand and deliver for Sehwag. He hit through the line with effortless ease as the target kept coming down at a rapid pace.

And of course, there was his trusted partner Gautam Gambhir at the other end. It seemed that the duo had decided to take charge of the business atleast at the end of the tournament. Even after Gambhir got out, Sehwag, along With Tillekeratne Dilshan, carried on for a while, but Harbhajan Singh struck off successive balls to bring some life back into the game.

Bhajji (4/17) removed AB de Villiers and Rajat Bhatia too to create some flutter, but Dinesh Karthik and Amit Mishra stemmed the rot to ensure a four-wicket win. Earlier, Delhi’s leading paceman Dirk Nannes, too, looked in fine form, removing Sanath Jayasuriya and JP Duminy early.

Deccan Chargers Vs Royal Challengers: Thrilling Clash between Deccan and Bangalore

May 21, 2009 By: Spunky Category: IPL 2010 - IPL 3 No Comments →

As the race to reach the semi-finals of IPL nears a thrilling climax, a resurgent Royal Challengers Bangalore will clash with Deccan Chargers in a virtual quarter-final on Thursday.

Bangalore, who started IPL’s season 2 with an upset win over defending champions Rajasthan Royals, will wind down the league engagement and a victory in the last match will propel them to the last-four stage.

What makes this match interesting besides the obvious lure of a last-four berth is that both Bangalore and Deccan were the bottom placed teams last season and have made a significant progress to push for a semi-final spot this time.

And both teams, with 14 points from 13 matches, would now hope to make all the hard work count.

Deccan, after a dazzling start, had been inconsistent.

The one-run defeat to Mumbai Indians in their last encounter have hurt them a lot. But they need to pull up their socks for one final fling in the most crucial game so far in the tournament.

Inconsistency has also been a constant with the Royal Challengers. They have won seven of their 13 matches losing six, the same as Deccan.

But off late, they are in the middle of another purple patch, having dispatched Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils in their last three encounters. Royal Challengers have done well so far under Anil Kumble’s leadership. At the same time they have shown a tendency of relying heavily on the batting of Jacques Kallis.

They have some clean hitters in Ross Taylor and Robin Uthappa, but they need to provide Kallis support against a Deccan bowling attack that boasts of RP Singh, the tournament’s highest wicket-taker so far with 19 scalps.

Kumble’s guile will be tested against the likes of Adam Gilchrist and Herschelle Gibbs at the top order while Andrew Symonds and Rohit Sharma can trouble many with their big hitting in the middle.

With a berth in the semi-finals acting as the incentive, this match could offer plenty of high drama.

Kolkata Knight Riders Vs Rajasthan Royals: Rajasthan fails to defend their Title

May 21, 2009 By: Spunky Category: IPL 2010 - IPL 3 No Comments →

Rajasthan Royals had weapons like lethal bowling, athletic fielding and super strategies to defend their Champion’s title, but pathetic batting poured cold water on their aspirations, according to their dejected skipper Shane Warne.

IPL 2 Rajasthan Royals Shane Warne

“While defending we gave absolutely everything we had and showed the real fighting power we have. It is disappointing as defending champions for not making it into the semi finals.

“I think our bowling was good as any team probably the best in the IPL. Our field setting and tactics was as good as anyone but unfortunately our batsmen just didn’t fire. We were always under pressure after the first six overs as we lost our top order regularly. At the end of the day that probably costs us,” the legendary leg-spinner said.

The defending champions crashed out of the IPL season 2 after failing to defend a modest 101 against Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday.

Chennai Super Kings Vs Kings XI Punjab: Chennai makes it to the semis

May 21, 2009 By: Spunky Category: IPL 2010 - IPL 3 No Comments →

Preity Zinta turned out to be the last of the Bollywood stars twinkling in the IPL whose team made an exit from the tournament when they lost to Chennai Super Kings by 24 runs on Wednesday at the Kingsmead.

Shah Rukh Khan’s team had lost its way long back, Shilpa Shetty’s team lost on Wednesday afternoon and in the evening, it was Zinta’s turn.

On the other hand, the four semifinalists of the tournament were virtually confirmed with Delhi of course being the first to make it, followed by Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore.

While Hyderabad and Bangalore are yet to play their 14th and last game in which they take on each other, both teams have a much better run-rate than Kings XI Punjab despite the three tied on 14 points.

Unless either Bangalore or Hyderabad manage something absolutely atrocious, they would make it to the semifinals. Kings XI can blame the situation now on some wonderful bowling performance by Chennai, a couple of spectacular catches, and their own bad batting performance.

Chennai had just 116 runs to defend and they made the best use of the resources available to help their cause. The Australian opener Matthew Hayden had been rested keeping the inconsequent match in mind.

MS Dhoni won the toss, elected to bat first and George Bailey and Parthiv Patel got the team off to a brisk start at 10 runs per over.

Raina celebrating after Yuvraj's wicket

It seemed like they were hardly missing Hayden just when the first blow came and Bailey was run out by Yuvraj Singh. It was a blow Chennai should’ve gotten over but instead kept slipping further and wickets fell at regular intervals.

Preity Zinta

It seemed like Punjab were well on course to the semifinals. That was, however, before a huge batting disorder did the latter in.

A very strong batting line-up was all packed off with 24 runs left on the board. Just like Jaipur, the Kings too snatched defeat from the jaws of what could’ve been an imminent victory.

Kolkata Knight Riders Vs Rajasthan Royals: Kolkata won toss and opts to bowlout Rajasthan

May 20, 2009 By: Spunky Category: IPL 2010 - IPL 3 No Comments →

Kolkata Knight Riders captain Brendon McCullum won the toss and elected to bowl against Rajasthan Royals in the 53rd match of the second edition of the Indian Premier League at Kingsmead in Durban on Wednesday.

Rajasthan have replaced Graeme Smith with Tyron Henderson.

Rajasthan have stuttered in the tournament and have rarely looked like the defending champions.

Injuries and the absence of some of last year’s key players have affected Rajasthan’ progress this season. They have won six of their 13 matches with an equal number of defeats against their name.

With 13 points, they need victory against Kolkata to brighten their prospects of a semi-final berth, though; Rajasthan would still have to depend on other results.

Kolkata, who have long been out of a semi-final reckoning, would love to play spoilsport and finish their campaign on a high after a disastrous run that saw them lose eight successive matches.

The bowling would once again depend on Shane Warne to pull the strings while Munaf Patel’s performance at the start would also prove crucial.

Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab will fight for a semifinal spot in the Indian Premier League on Wednesday in Durban.

Super Kings lost their last match to bottom-placed Kolkata Knight Riders which left them on 15 points and requiring a victory in their last league match to make it to the semis.

If they lose, they will have to depend on the results of other teams to reach the semi-final.

For Kings XI Punjab, who are on 14 points, a loss here will see the end of their title hopes.

Kings XI Punjab will be high on confidence after two back-to-back wins against Delhi Daredevils and Deccan Chargers.
