The curse of the twitter : End of Lalit Modi

April 27, 2010 By: Track Monitor Category: Editorial No Comments →

The curse of the tweet has caught up with Shahsi Tharoor and Lalit Modi. Tharoor has been a tweet happy guy ever since he was drafted into the Manmohan Singh Government. With the increased popularity and an imparted image of a modern politician, Tharoor wanted to tweet from everywhere from restrooms or while running to catch a flight.

The adulation he receieved from the Indian younger generation sent him on a coalition course with less tech savvy politicians. From his comments of Cattle Class on austerity drive to commenting on policy announcements on Government, Sashi Tharoor was always one strike away from red carded.

On the other end Lalit Modi started the profitable business from BCCI, though it wasnt as original or as new, he had the ability think out of the box to make it a huge commercial success. Modi knew the knack of attracting Big business houses into IPL and at times we were wondering if IPL was created for the audience or the corporate bosses. Lalit Modi never had a clean image earlier, Be it getting arrested for cocaine possession, or kidnapping charges or his murky deals in Rajashtan.

But one thing he always had was backing from Big Business houses and politicians. With the success of IPL he went on a powertrip, Sharad Pawar was his godfather in politics andVijay Mallya and Mukesh Ambani did the same from coporate world.

But with all the Glam Sham both these twitterers were getting, it was destined that both their careers would be screwed by a tweet. And it was from Lalit Modi trying to bring to the fore ownership details of Kochi IPL franchise, but what Lalit Modi was thinking when he twittered this information isnt clear.
Maybe he did in a fit of anger or maybe he thought he can do it because he had information.Could be that Modi was irritated he couldn’t get a franchise for his close friend Dhoot (Videocon Chairman) or maybe he wanted to irritate Shashi Tharoor.

Being a twitterer himself Tharoor wasnt backing in the fight, he started ponting out Modi’s past and also pressure on their franchise to backout. The first wicket was Shashi Tharoor, thanks to opposition and media. But then when you fight with ruling party results usually wont favor you, BCCI team who have been rubbed the wrong way more than once by Modi, came out publically reprimanding Modi. And Congress pressured Pawar to back down his support for Lalit Modi. Once Pawar was told that if Modi falls, Pawar or his party wouldn’t be disturbed, Pawar had to give in.

Now our hero Lalit Modi doesnt have his allies to protect him.. though he gave a sentimental speech on the IPL3 finals and also quoted Bagavat Gita. Of all the wrong doings he has done over years.. its just that one Tweet which ended a small but this controversial saga.

Lalit Modi goes crazy over Kochi Franchise

April 14, 2010 By: Track Monitor Category: IPL 2010 - IPL 3 No Comments →

From the day one  Lalit Modi’s displeasure at Kochi being selected as one of the new franchise was evident,  He wanted Ahmedabad as the second team after Pune, but sadly for him bidding process  isn’t that predictable. But it appears Lalit Modi is a sore loser, he has started tweeting the confidential shareholding details of Kochi Franchise, irking anger from BCCI as well as Kochi Franchise.

Kochi IPL team has responded saying “Will Lalit Modi release the information for Kolkata and Rajasthan as well?  Why should he target us? “. The whole episode isnt going to gain any sympathizers for Modi,  and might face the irk of ruling Congress, as he is a close friend of former Rajasthan CM  (BJP) Vasundara Raje . Also the claim of Modi that he only wants to have clarity about shareholders will find very less takers, considering Lalit Modi’s image prior to IPL was not a clean one.

The battle between Lalit Modi and Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor has taken a serious turn today as IPL Kochi team came out saying that Modi was ready to pay money if IPL Kochi bid is withdrawn.

Lets see how this one ends next week in BCCI executive meeting.

Modi said IPL will be expanded to 10 Teams by 2011

May 25, 2009 By: Spunky Category: IPL 2010 - IPL 3 No Comments →

Lalit Modi, the Chairman and Commissioner of the Indian Premier League said the eight-team tournament will be expanded to 10 teams in 2011.

Mr. Modi also said the IPL will be back in India next year and the cramped International Cricket Council (ICC) schedule does not leave any room for the possibility of a second IPL in a calendar year in 2010.

“We have been missing India but we have made a strong fan base in South Africa. We have a tight schedule next year. But we will have two more teams in the league from 2011,” said Modi.

Modi, who is also the vice-president of the BCCI, said that organising the IPL in South Africa was a great experience.

“We had a great time in South Africa. Everything was perfect. I am satisfied with the way the tournament was successfully conducted here at such a short time,” he said.

Strategy breaks to be reduced?

May 06, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Cricket News, IPL 2010 - IPL 3 No Comments →

The much-criticised ’strategy breaks’ in the Indian Premier League could be revised for the semifinal and final matches, IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi hinted on Tuesday.

Modi said the idea was yet to be ratified by the IPL technical committee but possibly the 15-minute strategy break would be reduced to 10 minutes.

He said instead of having one seven-and-a-half-minute interruption after the 10 over, it would be two two-and-a-half minute breaks in an innings, the second of which would be decided by the fielding side.

“It’s not frozen yet but we are looking at two aspects. There will be two two-and-a-half-minutes breaks per innings, so the break in all during an innings will be of five minutes.”

“The first two-and-a-half-minute break will be just after the powerplay (6 overs) and the second to be taken by the fielding side at any time,” Modi said.

The IPL commissioner said strategy breaks were a part of every sport and there is nothing new about it.

“It happens in every sport, there is a strategy break and everything. But 7.5 minutes may look like a bit longer, so we are seeing how we can reduce it down to five minutes,” Modi told.

Modi confirms SA as IPL 2 Venue

March 25, 2009 By: Spunky Category: IPL 2010 - IPL 3 No Comments →

South Africa will host the second edition of the multi-billion dollar Indian Premier League (IPL) from April 18 at six venues.

The IPL Twenty20 championship will be played at Durban, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Pretoria, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth.

With South Africa saying yes to IPL, League Commissioner and Chairman Lalit Modi’s search for a country to host the second edition of the Twenty20 championship is finally over.

The 59 matches of the IPL will be played in the six stadiums across the country at 1600 hrs IST and 2000 hrs IST.

Modi met Cricket South Africa CEO Gerald Majola at an undisclosed venue to discuss the possibility of hosting the second edition of the Twenty20 event here. And after the meeting, sources told CNN-IBN that the deal was sealed to host the league in South Africa.

South Africa says there will be no trouble staging the League and has assured full security. Cricket South Africa, it is reported, has also offered full support to the IPL.

According to the original schedule, the IPL was to kick off from April 10 but it is being reported that the reason for postponing the tournament is to give the Indian players a breather. India will be finishing their current tour of New Zealand on April 7.

England weather threatens IPL 2

March 24, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Cricket News No Comments →

The contest between England and South Africa to stage the Indian Premier League (IPL) was hotting up as bad weather threatened to cool English hopes of staging the lucrative Twenty20 event.

Organisers have had to take the second edition of the lucrative tournament out of its homeland, with the Indian government saying it cannot provide sufficient security forces for both the forthcoming general election and the Twenty20 competition, which runs from April 10-May 24.

IPL chiefs were attracted to England for several reasons.

Among those were the relatively short distance between venues and the strong support for Asian teams in the country’s major cities, which are also home to Test match grounds that could stage fixtures.

But according to a report, opinion has moved sharply in favour of South Africa, with IPL officials increasingly worried by how rain, which often makes a major dent in the early part of an English cricket season, could adversely affect up to 70 percent of their fixture schedule.

South Africa not only has generally better weather but its domestic season is due to end just the day before the IPL’s scheduled start.
