Hero Honda Cup 2009: India vs Australia

November 09, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Cricket News No Comments →

Sunday was a bad day for India who opted to bat first and finally lost the show to the touring team Australia in the 6th ODI of the Hero Honda Cup. With this victory, Australia has clinched the seven match series by 4-2.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and chose to bat first in the heavy weather conditions and the side suffered since the beginning as they lost the top batting order. They never got the time to recover and hence fell flat to the World Champions.
India managed to make 170 in 48 overs while the Australians chased down the target in 41.5 overs losing just 4 wickets.
From Australian side, Shane Watson (49), Ricky Ponting (25), Cameron White (25) helped for a good base while the match was completed by Michael Hussey (35 not out) and Adam Voges (23 not out).
Previously, India who opted to bat first were slumped to 27/5 in 9 overs and even a hundred looked far for the team.
Fortunately, Ravindra Jadeja (57) and Praveen Kumar (54 not out) pushed the score to 170 before they coiled.

India vs Australia: Australia lead by 1-0

October 26, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Cricket News No Comments →

India came close to victory against Australia in the first One-Day International but lost to the Champions by just 4 runs, with victory coming only in the final over.
It was Harbhajan Singh (49 from 31 balls) and Praveen Kumar (40 from 32 balls – not out) who took the match a long way with their 84-run stand off 57 deliveries.
Even captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni conceded that his team lost the plot well before Harbhajan and Kumar staged a fightback. He felt the match was lost in the five overs of batting Powerplay – which was taken at the start of the 35th over – when three wickets fell while scoring just 32 runs.
“We lost four wickets in the Powerplay and I think that was the turning point. We lost three wickets in the Poweplay without cashing in too much, but thanks to Bhajji and Praveen they took the game close. I think we lost too many wickets in the Powerplay,”Dhoni said, reflecting on the defeat at the IPCL stadium in Vadodara on Sunday.

India Vs Australia: India hit by injuries

October 25, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Cricket News No Comments →

Indian team is hit by injuries this India Australia series. There is doubt if the Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and explosive batsman Yuvraj Singh will feature in the tomorrow’s first match. However, Dhoni doesn’t have any replacement and is expected to remain while Yuvraj is likely to be fit for the second ODI.
Dhoni limped off the ground after hurting his left knee during practice on Friday while Yuvraj was yet to recover fully from a finger injury that kept him out of the Champions Trophy in South Africa in September-October.
Dhoni stopped short of ruling out Yuvraj for the opening game while also refusing to confirm his availability.
At the pre-match media conference on Saturday, Dhoni said “I am feeling a lot better now but I will see how it goes on the morning of the match.”
“As for Yuvraj, all I can say is that he will surely be available for the second match.” He also added that “Most guys are carrying small niggles but there is nothing major.”
“You can’t do much when someone gets injured while batting or bowling during practice sessions, which are so intense.”
The injuries increase the home team’s pressure after their early exit from the Champions Trophy.
Dhoni is the only specialist wicketkeeper in the 15-member Indian squad as the selectors have left aside Dinesh Karthik, who was the back up keeper for the Champions Trophy.
India is however strengthened by the return of aggressive opener Virender Sehwag, who missed the action in South Africa with a shoulder injury.

India’s performance in Champions Trophy

October 03, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Champions Trophy 2009 No Comments →

India had one win, one wash out and one loss and they are out of the Champions Trophy. They started the tournament with the No.1 ranking but have ended up with a messy performance. Against Pakistan, neither batting nor bowling was excellent. Australia were well on their way to post a target close to 300 when skies started pouring. The performance was good against West Indies. It happened when the game between Pakistan and Australia was goint on. India would have had a good chance if only Australia hadn’t shown a nail-biting last ball victory.
Has India performed better in the tournament? Dhoni said “It is tough for me to decide if we were good in the tournament because we were off the boil only in one game. Even when we were chasing 300-odd runs against Pakistan if we had capitalised on the start we got, we could have won the game. That was our off game. The second game was washed out and the third one we won. It is really difficult to say if this performance was bad. I was much more disappointed about the World T20 performance as we were really off the mark.”
Dhoni also added that the team missed bowling all-rounder who can contribute with bat and even ball at the time of need. “One of the reasons the Australian side is good is because they can play up to six specialist bowlers and they can all bat. If you look at Mitchell Johnson and Brett Lee, they can all bat and contribute a bit. I have always said we need to find a seam up bowler who can contribute with the bat because it always gives you the option of playing two spinners. At times, when you play five bowlers and six batsmen it is a worry because in day and night games chasing can become a problem if you lose early wickets. In this tournament we were forced to play with five bowlers and not all of them could bat.”
