Chennai Kings Vs Punjab Kings: Dhoni upset with Chennai fielding

Indian and Chennai Super Kings Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was fuming instead of celebrating the narrow win against Kings XI Punjab, as poor catching threatened to cost them the high-scoring IPL thriller on Thursday.

Yuvraj Singh was batting on 19 when he miscued a shot off Muttiah Muralitharan but much to the horror of the Chennai side, Manpreet Gony grassed the catch in the deep.

Yuvraj went on to slam an unbeaten 36-ball 58 and even though it was not enough to see his side through, Dhoni didn’t mince his words in criticising the lapse.

“It was important to win this match but we were just not up to the mark,” an angry Dhoni said after the match.

“We have not stopped dropping catches. There was nothing in the pitch for the spinners and here you spill an opportunity and that too off a batsman like Yuvraj Singh,” Dhoni said.

“I’m happy to be on the winning side but we needed to win the match comfortably. In all the matches we have lost, we dropped catches of set batsmen and that is disappointing,” Dhoni said.

“This is happening again and again. At this level, you cannot afford to drop catches of someone like Yuvraj. We paid the price for that and it became a close match,” Dhoni explained.

His opposite number Yuvraj was also dejected after failing to see his team through in the tense match. “We almost got there but it’s disappointing not to win the match,” a dejected Yuvraj said.

Admitting that bowling remains a problem for his team, Yuvraj said, “Had we been able to restrict them to 160-170, we would have won the match. Our bowling remains a major problem for us, especially bowling at the death. We have to sort out this issue,” he said.

Yuvraj reckoned Thursday’s defeat has left them with no other option but to try and win all their remaining games which is a huge task.

“We have to win 100 per cent matches and that’s not easy,” he said.

Yuvraj was also unhappy that he could not ensure a win despite staying till the end. “I’m not happy with myself either. I should have seen it through. I think I too need to brush up my game,” he said.

Man of the Match Matthew Hayden said he was enjoying his game and felt Dhoni’s presence at the other end helped him.

Chennai Super Kings Vs Delhi Daredevils: Delhi won toss, chose to bat

April 23, 2009 By: Spunky Category: IPL 2010 - IPL 3 No Comments →

Yet another interesting match in the Indian Premium League season two, between the Delhi Daredevils and Chennai Super Kings has just begun in Durban.

Daredevils won toss and chose to bat first. The openers Gambir (0) and Sehwag (6) walked back to the pavilion in the initial overs leaving the Delhi devils in a critical position. The scenario was changed completely by the Sri Lankan Dilshan who made the fastest 50 with just 24 balls. Raina’s catch with Morkel’s bowling brought Dilshan’s performance to a halt when he was 50. The openers wickets were taken by L.Balaji and Manpreet Gony.

The latest score update is 90-3 in 10 overs.

Royal Challengers Vs Chennai Super Kings: Chennai Super Kings won by 92 runs

April 21, 2009 By: Spunky Category: IPL 2010 - IPL 3 No Comments →

The Chennai Super Kings put their title back on track in stunning manner with a massive 92-run win over the Bangalore Royal Challengers in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match here Monday.

The Chennai side first scored 179 for five, riding on Australian Matthew Hayden’s blistering 35-ball 65, and then bundled out Bangalore for just 87 in 15.2 overs.

Hayden, who retired from international cricket earlier this year, was at his dominating best, picking gaps to reach his third IPL half-century in just 22 balls, and in the process, helping the Chennai side to the highest Twenty20 score at St George’s Park here.

If Hayden was the batsman around whom the Chennai innings built their innings after captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss, it was Sri Lankan spin wizard Muttiah Muralidharan, who bewildered the Bangalore batsmen with his variations and turn, returning figures of 3/11 from four overs. Laxmipathi Balaji took two wickets while Manpreet Gony, Andrew Flintoff, Albie Morkel and Joginder Sharma chipped with one wicket each to throttle the Bangalore batsmen.

Set a huge target of 180 at nine per over, Bangalore were never in with a chance as their top five were gone by the eighth over for a mere 50 runs.
