Chennai bowlers set up a 24 run Victory over Mumbai

April 07, 2010 By: Track Monitor Category: IPL 2010 - IPL 3, Match Summary No Comments →

For a change Chennai Super King bowlers bowled well to contain Mumbai Indians. In the previous match in the same venue even after scoring 246, Chennai was about to lose the match thanks to some spineless bowling. But they got their act together today to restrict Mumbai Indians to less than 164.

Earlier Chennai were of to a slow start and lost M Vijay early to Harbhajan Singh in fourth over of the match, the pitch had bounce and was little slower. Suresh Raina tried to accelerate but holed out trying a pull a Bravo short ball. Finally Hayden started stroking in the company of Dhoni and the two increased the run rate to around 9 in over before both falling in the same over of Kieron Adrian Pollard in the 14 th Over. At the end of 14th over score read 119/4 with both Michael Hussey and Badrinath on nought. Both struggled to get the boundaries and it was some innovative reverse cuts and sweeps from Badrinath in the last 2 overs ensured chennai finishes with 164 on board. Chennai and everyone felt they are atleast 20 runs short from the start they had.

The second innings started with Sudeep Tyagi getting a nice away movement in the very first ball, on the other end Doug Bollinger wasnt as economical today, everytime Tyagi or Bollinger pitched it up, both Sachin and Shikar Dhawan were ready to take them to cleaners. But the Chennai Fast bowlers were much more disciplined and used the short ball to good use and preventing the Mumbai Indians from getting a flying start. Though Mumbai did not lose any wickets, their required run rate was always hovering aroung 8.5, before Sachin started cramping up and started struggling a lot.

After a short break to hydrate the very first ball of Thusara’s over consumed the wicket of Dhawan who was little early on the cut and ended up dragging the ball on to his wicket. And 2 overs later Sachin departed retired sick and the scores read 62/1 after 8.6 overs. From then it was a familiar story of late nineties Indian teams, and the Mumbai Indians fell like a deck of cards. Ambati Rayudu tried to step out against a clever Suresh Raina who shortened the length to get his man stumped.

Bravo tried to clear Tyagi over long off but instead gave a long skier for Thusara who completed a superb catch falling backwards. Then it was turn of another big hiiter Saurabh Tiwary who could get going tried to heave Shadab jakati over Mathew Hayden in the inner circle, but instead gave him a dolly. Pollard was next to go producing the catch of the match by Murali Vijay who avoided collission with Thusara to complete a neat catch. From then it was no turning back, visibly tired Sachin returned to join Harbhajan after 8th wicket, but wasnt able to do much with the Require rate howering around 15 runs per over.

For Chennai the spinners Ashwin ,Tyagi, Raina and Shadab Jakati bowled tight. Thusara wasn’t giving anything away but the wet ball in the end ensure he bowled two beamers, and had to be removed from bowling his last 3 balls. Funnily Doug Bollinger had the  worst economy rate on a day when  all other bowlers bowled well.

Match 4: West Indies vs India: India won ODI series

July 06, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Cricket News 2 Comments →

India made amends for their Twenty20 World Cup disaster by winning the ODI series against West Indies by 2-1 after rains washed out the fourth and final ODI at the Beausejour Stadium on Sunday.
The tourists won the four-match series 2-1 following victories in the series opener in Jamaica and the third match on Friday. Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was adjudged the Man of the Series.
The match started an hour late following heavy rains just after India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and elected to field.
West Indies were 27 for one when rain interrupted play for the second time after they had lost the crucial wicket of skipper Chris Gayle for a duck.
Runako Morton (12 not out) and Ramnaresh Sarwan (12 not out) were at the crease when play was called off.
With this victory, India registered only their second bilateral series triumph in the Caribbean. Last time they won a series in West Indies was in 2002 under Sourav Ganguly’s captaincy.
India had earlier won the first match of the series by 20 runs, while West Indies came back strongly in the second, hammering the Dhoni-led side by eight wickets.
However riding on Dhoni’s brilliance, India took the unassailable 2-1 lead, winning the third ODI by six wickets with a ball to spare.

Dravid among Champions trophy probables

July 06, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Cricket News No Comments →

Rahul Dravid finds himself back in the ODI reckoning after the former captain was named in India’s 30-member probables list for the Champions Trophy on Monday.
The All-India Senior Selection Committee met to pick the 30 probables for the elite top-eight tournament to be held in South Africa during September 2009, however decided to ignore the likes of Irfan Pathan and Robin Uthappa.
A veteran of 333 ODIs, Dravid has not featured in India’s ODI squad since playing his last one dayer against Australia in Nagpur in 2007.
Senior cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, who had opted out of the just-concluded West Indies tour, returns to the side as do the injured duo of Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan.
Hard-hitting Delhi batsman Virat Kohli, Bengal stumper Wriddhiman Saha, Tamil Nadu’s R Ashwin and Murali Vijay also found a place in the list of probables.
UP pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rajasthan medium pacer Pankaj Singh and the Mumbai duo of Ajinkya Rahane and Dhawal Kulkarni also found mention in the list.
Probables:
MS Dhoni, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Suresh Raina, Yusuf Pathan, Abhishek Nayar, Ishant Sharma, Zaheer Khan, R P Singh, Praveen Kumar, Harbhajan Singh, Pragyan Ojha, Ravindra Jadeja, Dinesh Karthik, Munaf Patel, R Ashwin, M Vijay, Amit Mishra, Ajinkya Rahane, Dhawal Kulkarni, S Badrinath, Ashish Nehra, Virat Kohli, Bhuvneshwar Kumar Singh, Wridhiman Saha and Pankaj Singh

Match 2: West Indies Vs India: India lost by 8 wickets

June 29, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Cricket News, Highlights No Comments →

The West Indies scored a convincing eight-wicket victory over India on Sunday in the second one-day cricket international at Sabina Park. The team was backed by an inspired display from their fast bowlers.
The four-match series is now level at 1-1 as the teams head to St Lucia for the final two matches next Friday and Sunday.
Man of the Match Ravi Rampaul took a career-best 4-37 as the visitors were bowled out for a modest 188 off 48.2 overs.
Dwayne Bravo claimed 3-26 and Jerome Taylor 3-35 but India’s captain MS Dhoni cracked a defiant 95 off 130 balls to offer some respectability to his team’s innings.
Dhoni and RP Singh (23) produced a record ninth wicket stand of 101 after the home team was well on top at 8-82.
But the West Indies coasted to victory as Captain Chris Gayle and Runako Morton hit contrasting half centuries in a century opening stand.
Gayle blasted eight fours and two sixes in 64 off 46 balls. While Morton hit six fours in an unbeaten 85 off 102 deliveries and finished the match with his only six as the West Indies reached 2-192 off 34.1 overs.
The disappointed Dhoni said “I think we didn’t assess the wicket well enough and went on with our strokes and that really caused our downfall.”
“Once you lose too many wickets early on, the only job you’re doing is catching up,” Dhoni added.
India, who won the toss, were quickly reduced to 3-7 in the second over when Rampaul removed Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma for ducks.
Dhoni and Friday’s century-maker Yuvraj Singh rebuilt the damage in a fluent stand of 47 for the fourth wicket.
Yuvraj showed an exquisite touch, becoming the fifth Indian batsman to reach 7,000 runs in ODI cricket before he departed for 35 off 33 balls.
The left-hander, who hit five fours and one stunning pulled six, chased a wide delivery from Taylor and presented Ramdin with another catch at 54-4.
India soon slipped to 82-8 as Yusuf Pathan (0), Ravindra Jadeja (7), Harbhajan Singh (7) and Praveen Kumar (1) fell in quick succession.
However, the home team couldn’t complete the job as Dhoni and Singh shared their record partnership.
Bravo eventually claimed Singh for a career-best 23 off 75 balls while Taylor bowled Dhoni five short of a fifth one-day century.

Match 20: India Vs England: Wil Dhoni make miracle happen

June 14, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Champions Trophy 2009, Player News No Comments →

The struggling form of Indian captain – and most versatile batsman – and how to compensate for it? Can we expect Dhoni return to his form against England?

India’s strength is that every one of their players is capable of winning a match through individual brilliance. Even the loss of one of the world’s most dangerous openers was overcome by a middle-order batsman making the transition to the top of the order seamlessly. They have tried to fortify that advantage with flexibility by attempting to shuffle the middle order according to how the openers fare.

Between Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir, Rohit has been the more aggressive batsman and so India have sent in MS Dhoni at No. 3 should Gambhir fall first to steady one end while Rohit attacks at the other. And if Rohit should be dismissed first, like against West Indies, Suresh Raina will take up the attacking role at No. 3. It’s an excellent plan, for a fluid batting order keeps the opposition guessing and batsmen versatile enough to slot into different roles are valuable in the Twenty20 format. The problem, however, is Dhoni’s loss of form.

Dhoni has batted in various positions from No. 2 to 8 and, when in form, he’s played different roles – from sheet anchor to aggressor – successfully. He even considered opening in the World Twenty20 before offering Rohit the job in Virender Sehwag’s absence. In recent times, Dhoni has taken up the responsibility of guiding the innings, holding one end up, scoring at a run-a-ball, letting the other shot-makers attack before joining them.

India have had to manage without a significant contribution from Dhoni so far in this tournament. He struggled during the IPL and carried that indifferent form to England, scoring 6, 9*, 26 and 14 during the warm-ups and group matches. Dhoni batted at No. 3 during those matches ahead of more in-form batsmen.

Teams:
England: PD Collingwood, JM Anderson, RS Bopara, SCJ Broad, JS Foster, RWT Key, AD Mascarenhas, EJG Morgan, GR Napier, KP Pietersen, AU Rashid, OA Shah, RJ Sidebottom, GP Swann, LJ Wright

India: MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, G Gambhir, Harbhajan Singh, RA Jadeja, KD Karthik, Z Khan, P Kumar, PP Ojha, IK Pathan, YK Pathan, SK Raina, I Sharma, RG Sharma, RP Singh

Match 12: India Vs Ireland: India not taking Ireland easily

June 10, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Champions Trophy 2009 No Comments →

India and Ireland have both qualified for the Super Eights and their groups are decided so in terms of progression in this tournament nothing rides on this match. But India won’t want to go to the next round with a shock defeat, nor will Ireland want to go without a fight after beating Bangladesh. At any rate they are yet to lose a Twenty20 international from the five they have played.

India move into the tougher Super Eights group and will look at this game as a chance to iron out any flaws they feel exist. As it is they will probably be the least tested team in the Super Eights, with Bangladesh the third team in the weak Group A. India have been hurt by Virender Sehwag’s return home with injury and will need to put that aside immediately.

Dhoni should not come in at three for India

June 07, 2009 By: Track Monitor Category: Champions Trophy 2009 1 Comment →

It has been very irritating to see MS Dhoni promoting himself ahead of Suresh Raina in the recent T20 matches for India. This too when Suresh Raina is in tremendous form. MS Dhoni is not exactly a natural free stroking player in a team filled with players of that kind. India has Yuvraj Singh,Suresh Raina and Yusuf Pathan who can hit without actually trying to hit.

If you would have followed Chennai Super Kings you would have seen the trend MS Dhoni never got really going in terms of his powerful hitting. His main area is straight down the ground and for playing that shot he needs come down the track, but Raina and Yuvraj can produce huge hits all around the ground. A player like Raina can make the bowler unsettled right from the word go and help his batting partner. Today the opposite effect was evident against Bangladesh, where both Dhoni and Gambhir got bogged down thanks to a very conservative batting approach till 16th over.Once Yuvraj came in it felt like he is playing in a totally different ground and against a different set of bowlers, he was immediately able to push the bowlers to err in line and length.

Though India won the match comfortably today , whomsoever is calling the shorts in terms of batting order should not send Dhoni in at No 3.
