The second edition of Indian Premier League has been insured for USD 286 million, more than double the amount – USD 125 million – spent last season, owing to terror threats.

Besides, the whopping sum for overall insurance for the tournament, India and Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has attracted the highest individual insurance cover of USD 10.5 million.

Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh follow behind with Sri Lankan Sanath Jayasuriya of the Mumbai Indians commanding the highest price among overseas players.

The insurance cover for individual players were decided by the franchises and ranged from USD 2.5 million to USD 10.5 million.

The loss of baggage cover means that players will be paid the cost of their belongings, in case they lose them during the course of the tournament.

The policies will be effective from the time the players leave for the 47-day tournament, to be staged from April 18-May 24, till they return home.

Royal Challengers Vs Chennai Super Kings: Kevin Pietersen Vs Dhoni

April 20, 2009 By: Spunky Category: IPL 2010 - IPL 3 No Comments →

Dhoni and Kevin Pietersen the two maverick leaders of Team Chennai and Royal Challengers will clash in the fifth match of the Indian Premier League at Port Elizabeth on Monday.

Having lost the tournament-opener to Mumbai Indians by 19 runs, Chennai, last year’s runners up, will be hoping to get on the points table on Monday.

They will be up against a buoyed up Royal Challengers outfit after their crushing 75-run win over defending champions Team Jaipur in Cape Town on Saturday.

Both teams will need to keep the conditions of Port Elizabeth in mind when they decide on the combination. Port Elizabeth has always been a slowish wicket which tends to keep a bit low.

The spinners, who very much called the shots on Day 1 of the tourney, could be in business again at St George’s Park. May be, it’s a chance for Dhoni to drop one of his seamers, probably Thilan Thushara and get in the Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan.

In hindsight, Dhoni will rue the absence of the explosive Albie Morkel in the first match who could not play as his kit was misplaced by the airline in Johannesburg.

His sharp seam bowling and lusty hitting could just have meant the difference between victory and defeat. The Royal Challengers though will be keen on maintaining the momentum they gained from their massive win over the Rajasthan.

KP will be keen to repeat the stroke, which caused so much debate in cricketing circles, in the shortest form of the game. The Team Chennai vs Royal Challengers clash will also witness a battle within a battle as Pietersen will face off against Andrew Flintoff, his fellow Englishman and fellow $1.55m-man in IPL 2.

Dhoni Vs Sachin in IPL 2, match 1

April 18, 2009 By: Spunky Category: IPL 2010 - IPL 3 No Comments →

They are easily the biggest icons of Indian cricket. If one has been the inspirational leader, the other has been the supreme performer, and the two have taken Team India from strength to strength over the past couple of years.

And Mahendra Singh Dhoni would be the first to acknowledge that his success as Team India captain has had a lot to do with Tendulkar’s performances.

Now Dhoni, leading Team Chennai, has to face the wrath of the Little Master, when they take on Mumbai Indians in the opener of IPL 2 in the far-off shores of the Atlantic — the picturesque Newlands in Cape Town.

Case against Dhoni and Harbhajan

April 16, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Player News No Comments →

A criminal case was filed in a court on Thursday accusing Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh with ‘hurting’ fans by staying away from the Padma awards function.

Dhoni and Bhajji were to be honoured with the Padma Shree by President Pratibha Patil in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Senior advocate Sudhir Kumar Ojha alleged that the two cricketers insulted fans and dishonoured the prestigious award by staying away from the function.

The petition is likely to come up for hearing on Friday, he said.

Sachin proud of Dhoni’s leadership

April 15, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Cricket News No Comments →

Sachin Tendulkar has praised the leadership skills of MS Dhoni, who has overseen a successful six months for India after taking over as captain in all three formats.

“I’m extremely happy and delighted at the way he (Dhoni) has conducted himself,” Tendulkar said. “He is a balanced guy, is always on his toes all the time. Before he was made the captain, standing in the slips I interacted with him, and [he] picked [up a] lot of things which clearly indicated that he has a sharp brain, his approach was pretty clear and not complicated.”

India are fresh from their first Test series win in New Zealand in 41 years, and have also defeated Australia and England at home in the past eight months. India has an impressive record under Dhoni’s leadership, winning five out of seven Tests and losing none. Dhoni also led India to their longest winning-streak in one-dayers during comprehensive series wins over England and Sri Lanka, and most notably, led them to victory in the World Twenty20 in 2007. He’s captained his team in 51 ODIs, winning 31 of them.

Dhoni’s record with the bat as captain is significantly better than his overall stats. In the seven Tests he’s led India; he averages 60 as compared to his overall average of 37.73. His figures have been boosted by seven half-centuries, four of which came against Australia at home. He scored fifties in each innings against New Zealand in the rain-affected final Test in Wellington, where India fell just two wickets shy of wrapping up the series 2-0. The trend is similar in ODIs as well. He was India’s second-highest run-getter in 2008 and averages 57.81 in 51 matches as captain, as opposed to 49.26 overall.

Another experienced player who was impressed with Dhoni’s captaincy was VVS Laxman. “Dhoni is one of the best captains I have played under,” he said. “He is so calm and composed. He exudes a lot of confidence. It’s a great feeling to play under him.”

One of Dhoni’s biggest accomplishments as a leader has been forging a strong team spirit, and former captain Tendulkar said he relished playing the role of a senior member. “To players like Harbhajan Singh or Yuvraj Singh, I’m like their elder brother. I share information not just with them but also with other members of the side. It’s a terrific atmosphere in the dressing room and it’s not just one-way traffic,” he said. “We learn from each other and if someone has some issues, there is the coach. Generally it’s a great atmosphere and I enjoy being part of this side.”

When asked about his decision to not be part of the national Twenty20 side, Tendulkar said he did not want to upset a winning combination. India had won the inaugural World Twenty in South Africa two years ago, but Tendulkar had not been part of that team because of fitness problems. “It’s a team sport so, even if there is one weak link, it affects the whole team. I didn’t want it to happen. The team went to South Africa and did well. They settled quite nicely. I don’t want to disturb the combination now when they are going terrific.”

Dhoni is a ‘Successful Captain’ without loss

April 07, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Cricket News, Player News No Comments →

Cricket viewers will have mixed opinions on whether Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni took too long to declare Indian innings in the Wellington Test, which anyway led India to a series win by 1-0 after 41-years.

But the draw in Wellington Test also means that India have not lost a single Test under Dhoni. Out of 289 players, who have captained their respective sides in Test cricket, only nine have remained unbeaten after leading their sides in five or more matches.

Dhoni is the only one current players in this elite list.

BCCI bonanza for Team India

April 07, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Cricket News No Comments →

The Board of Control for Cricket in India today announced a bonus of Rs 15 lakh for each player after the India team’s historic Test and one-day series victory in New Zealand.

India clinched the three-match Test series 1-0 after the final Test ended in a draw in Wellington today. Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s team won the first Test in Hamilton by 10 wickets and the second in Napier ended in a draw.

This was India’s first Test series victory on New Zealand soil since Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi’s team achieved that feat in 1967-68.

Dhoni’s boys had earlier clinched the five-match one-day series 3-1, also their first series win in the shorter version of the game in New Zealand.

“Mr Shashank Manohar, President of the BCCI, has extended his congratulations to the Indian cricket team, for its outstanding display in New Zealand,” the BCCI said in a statement.

“The Board President has announced a bonus of Rs 15 lakh to every player who participated in the Test and one-day series. The support staff will receive a bonus of Rs 10 lakh each,” it said.
