India Vs New Zealand: Wellington Test, Day 2

April 04, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Cricket News No Comments →

Zaheer Khan claimed his sixth five-wicket Test haul and Mahendra Singh Dhoni held six catches as New Zealand was dismissed for 197 runs in reply to India’s first innings of 379 on the second day of the third Test on Saturday.

Zaheer had figures of 5-65 and Harbhajan Singh had 3-43 before India reached 51-1 in its second innings to take an overall lead of 233 runs in the last match of three-Test series, which India leads by  1-0.

Gautam Gambhir was 28 not out and Rahul Dravid was on 9 at close of play.

Virender Sehwag was out for 12 — with three fours — in the second over of India’s second innings, but the tourists reached stumps without further loss to hold a commanding position.

Dhoni became only the second Indian wicketkeeper to complete six dismissals in an innings, after Syed Kirmani’s effort against New Zealand in 1976, and the first to do so with six catches. Four keepers have claimed seven catches in a match and Dhoni is now the 14th to take six dismissals in an innings.

The second day encompassed parts of three innings.

India Vs New Zealand : 3rd test, Wellington

April 03, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Match Summary No Comments →

Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Harbhajan Singh scored half-centuries to lead India to 375-9 on the opening day of the 3rd and final cricket Test against New Zealand in Wellington.

Captain Dhoni hit 52 and Harbhajan scored 60 after the tourists lost their first six wickets for 131 runs in slumping to 204-6. World record run scorer Sachin Tendulkar made 62 before all five tail-end batsmen frustrated the bowlers by getting into double-figures. Zaheer Khan smashed Iain O’Brien for 18 runs from five balls then was caught behind off the final delivery of the over for 33.

The Indians won the opening Test and forced a draw in the second match after being forced to follow on, putting them within reach of a first series victory in New Zealand in 41 years. The Black Caps won the toss.

Dhoni to take fitness test on Wednesday

March 31, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Cricket News No Comments →

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who skipped the second Test against New Zealand with a back injury, will undergo a fitness Test on Wednesday to assess his chances of playing the third and final match in Wellington.

Virender Sehwag, who led the team in Dhoni’s absence, could not confirm Dhoni’s participation in the final Test starting on Friday.

Dhoni took part in the team practice ahead of the second Test before pulling out due to the injury and Sehwag, though tipped off the previous night, was asked to lead the side barely hours before the toss took place. Sehwag was in fact wearing Dhoni’s blazer when he went out for the toss of coin.

Crowe criticizes Sehwag

March 29, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Cricket News No Comments →

Former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe said India’s performance in the on-going second Test in Napier is a far cry from their attempt at becoming the world’s number one team. He has criticised stand-in skipper Virender Sehwag for his poor leadership.

Crowe claimed regular captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni – who is out with a back injury – was being sorely missed and pin pointed Sehwag’s leadership as one of the prime reasons for India’s desperate situation against the Kiwis in the second Test, which the visitors are trailing by 267 runs after following on.

He blasted Sehwag for his tactics and termed the Delhi dasher’s decisions as “unfocused thinking”. “I have never seen captaincy so bad as I saw with Virender Sehwag,” he added.

Pietersen to Captain Royal Challengers

March 23, 2009 By: Spunky Category: IPL 2010 - IPL 3 No Comments →

Former England skipper Kevin Pietersen has been named as the captain of his new Indian Premier League side, the Bangalore Royal Challengers.

Owner Vijay Mallya confirmed the decision over the weekend, despite Pietersen only being available for three of the IPL’s six weeks.

Bangalore finished last season’s IPL seventh out of eight teams, with just four wins from their 14 matches, and were criticised by fans. And it is thought that Mallya hopes the appointment of a more expensive captain to replace former Indian Test skipper Rahul Dravid.

“I am pleased to announce that the captain of Bangalore Royal Challengers will be Kevin Pietersen,” said Mallya, who confirmed that South Africa’s Jacques Kallis will take over as captain when the Englishman leaves.

“Kevin’s travel schedule is being finalised. He will come in time to captain and perform for the team.”

Pietersen was signed by Bangalore for a record $1.55 million (£1.1 million) at auction – joining fellow newcomer, England’s Andrew Flintoff, in breaking the previous mark of $1.5 million for Indian wicketkeeper batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
