Gary Kirsten blames IPL

India coach Gary Kirsten may attempt to convince his top players to turn their backs on Indian Premier League riches in the future in a bid to boost his side’s international prospects.
The World Twenty20 holders were bundled out of the competition at the Super Eights stage after Sunday’s defeat to England and Kirsten believes a combination of niggling injuries and lower-intensity cricket in the IPL were contributing factors.
“The one thing that didn’t play into our hands here is that we had a bunch of cricketers who were quite tired when they arrived,” said South African Kirsten.
Kirsten further added India had two relatively low intensity group games against Bangladesh and Ireland. But the standard of cricket and the quality of cricket has been higher than what was experienced in the IPL.
“I sense there’s a reasonably big gap between what’s happening at the IPL level and what’s happening internationally.”
“But we had a lot of players with niggles coming into this tournament. A lot of those niggles were picked up during the IPL. We lose contact with our players during IPL because they are connected to and responsible to their franchise.”
“The next World Twenty20 is only something like nine months away and we’re keen to start setting up our plans and strategies.
“We got it wrong in this tournament and we need to go forward from that.”

Dwayne Bravo, the Hero of the triumphant West Indies Team credited the match winning all round display to Indian Premier League which came about after he was declared unfit for the national test squad. The stunning performance of this player helped West Indies win over defending champions India in the Twenty20 World Cup.

Bravo first picked up four wickets and returned to smash a 36-ball 66 to power West Indies to a seven-wicket win over India in a Super Eight stage match on Friday.

Bravo said that playing in IPL helped him gain a lot of experience and sharing the dressing room with some of the best players in the world helped him contribute well.

Bravo, who played for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, thanked his captain Chris Gayle for sending him up the order at number four.

He further said that although the team continues to depend heavily on Gayle for a good start but there are players in the side who can chip in if the skipper gets out early.

Match 12: India Vs Ireland: India not taking Ireland easily

June 10, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Champions Trophy 2009 No Comments →

India and Ireland have both qualified for the Super Eights and their groups are decided so in terms of progression in this tournament nothing rides on this match. But India won’t want to go to the next round with a shock defeat, nor will Ireland want to go without a fight after beating Bangladesh. At any rate they are yet to lose a Twenty20 international from the five they have played.

India move into the tougher Super Eights group and will look at this game as a chance to iron out any flaws they feel exist. As it is they will probably be the least tested team in the Super Eights, with Bangladesh the third team in the weak Group A. India have been hurt by Virender Sehwag’s return home with injury and will need to put that aside immediately.

Match 8: Australia Vs Sri Lanka: Australia makes early exit

June 09, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Champions Trophy 2009 No Comments →

Team Australia under the Captain Ricky Ponting is set to leave their ICC World T20 2009 after their early exit from the tournament.

Australia lasted just four days in the tournament, only Scotland and Bangladesh exited earlier, losing first to West Indies by seven wickets and then by six to Sri Lanka at Trent Bridge on Monday night.

After the half-centuries posted by Tillekeratne Dilshan (53) and Kumar Sangakkara (55 not out) that helped the Sri Lanka go through to the Super Eights, Ponting said that they had moved in with high expectations.

The job was done with six balls to spare, after Ajantha Mendis (3-20) had helped to restrict Australia to only 159 for nine.
