India’s T20 World Cup Squad for the Caribbean

March 19, 2010 By: Spunky Category: Cricket News 2 Comments →

The Indian selectors would meet on March 26 to select 15 Men Squad for the T20 world cup in WestIndies (Caribbean Islands) from April 30 to May 16.

India is in Group C along with South Africa and Qualifiers Afghanistan and are scheduled to play Afghans on May 1 and the South Africans on May 2.The Indians would be playing these 2 group matches at St Lucia and If they are through to the second round(which is highly likely with Afghan as the third team) the next 3 matches would happen at St Lucia and Barbados.

Its weird with ICC Scheduling a consecutive T20 world cup in less than a year after England 2009, though it was meant to be a bi-yearly event and the official verdict was that a ODI world cup is scheduled to happen by 2011 and they are preponing the T20 Event to 2010.

Indian squad should not be with many changes or surprises for the WestIndies as One venue (st Lucia) have a great resemblance with Indian Wickets with not much bounce and aiding spin and the other venue(Barbados) as the one with true bounce aiding fast bowlers, spinners and batsmen alike.

Sehwag,Gambhir,Yuvraj,Raina,Kohli and Yusuf should be automatic selections for the batsmen slot.Zaheer,Ishant,Nehra,Praveen should make up the fast bowlers category while Harbhajan,Ravindra Jadeja should be the first option spinners. With Dhoni as the captain and frontline wicketkeeper,Dinesh Karthik should take up the reserve keeper slot as well as the pure batsman slot if needed. The above mentioned 14 men should be the automatic certainities provided no one picks up any injury during the month long IPL tourney.

The 15th man should be a point of debate as to pick a fast bowler or spinner or a batsman. To drill down further batting options are available in plenty in the above mentioned lot and wont need further strengthening. The bet should be between a spinner and or a fast bowler. The better option would be to go for a fast bowler as we have yusuf, sehwag and yuvraj who would roll their arm more than enough in addition to Harbhajan and Jadeja.Hence the final slot would be a toss up between sreesanth or Tyagi or whomsoever performing better at the IPL 2010.

The Probable Squad:

Virender Sehwag,Gautam Gambhir,Virat Kohli,Suresh Raina,Yuvraj Singh,Yusuf Pathan, MS Dhoni(c),Dinesh Karthik,Ravindra Jadeja,Harbhajan Singh,Zaheer Khan,Ashish Nehra,Ishant Sharma,Praveen Kumar,Sreesanth (or) Tyagi(Tentative).

Ponting retired fron Twenty20

September 08, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Cricket News, Player News No Comments →

Australia captain Ricky Ponting retired from Twenty20 international cricket to enhance his bid to make the 2013 Ashes.
Ponting came to his decision during a fortnight break from the tour of England with one last crack at a Test series over here at the forefront of his mind. Twice he has overseen Ashes defeats on English soil and he maintains a determination to address the statistic.
Upon departing for some time off with his family Down Under, he first referenced his desire to participate once more even though he will be 38, and he reaffirmed: “I was serious about it at the time. Having returned from England with the taste in my mouth that I had, I was very keen to be able to try and give it every possible crack to be back there again. This decision now is certainly part of giving myself the best chance to achieve that.”
He added: “As long as I’m playing well, and as long as I’m enjoying the game, then I’ve never put a limit on how long I can play the game for.
“I’m really passionate and committed to being the best player that I can be for Australia for as long as possible.
“Over the last couple of years I’ve found it increasing difficult to play all three forms of the game at the level that I want to play them.
“Looking at international Twenty20 cricket, I’ve looked at the program for the next couple of years. In the next 12 months alone, I’ve looked at having probably an extra four weeks off which will give me an opportunity to get away and just make sure that I’m ready to go for both the Test matches and the one-day cricket we have in that period.
“You look at even how I started this latest Ashes series, going in nice and fresh and making a hundred in the first game and almost going downhill during the series. I want to make sure that doesn’t occur for the rest of my career.
“I want to be as fresh as I possibly can for every one-day game or Test I play for the rest of my career and I think having the extra few weeks at home will give me a better chance to do that.”

Australian Captain Ricky Ponting retired fron Twenty20 Internationals. Still he will be available for the One Day Internationals and test matches.

Flintoff to retire from Test Cricket

July 15, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Cricket News, Player News No Comments →

The England and Wales Cricket Board said on Wednesday said that England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff is to retire from Test cricket at the end of the Ashes series against Australia because of persistent injury problems. The 31-year-old will continue to make himself available for one-day and Twenty20 fixtures, an ECB statement said.
“My body has told me it’s time to stop. Since 2005 I’ve had two years when I’ve done nothing but rehab from one injury or another,” Flintoff said.
“It’s been something I’ve been thinking about for a while and I think this last problem I’ve had with my knee has confirmed to me that the time is now right.”
Flintoff’s participation in the second Test at Lord’s, which starts on Thursday, remains in doubt after he suffered his latest injury in the first Test, when he bowled 35 overs. The Lancashire all-rounder had surgery for a torn meniscus in April, cutting short his time in the Indian Premier League.
The news is a big blow to England as Flintoff is not only a key strike bowler and destructive batsman but a huge personality who lifts his team-mates and the crowd.
Australia captain Ricky Ponting said on Wednesday he thought it had been a risk using Flintoff as one of only three seamers in Cardiff but added: “He showed the galvanizing effect he can have on the second afternoon (in Cardiff), when his spell after lunch really got the crowd going.”
Flintoff made his England debut in 1998 and has played 76 Tests and 141 One-Day Internationals. He averages 31.69 in Tests and has taken 219 wickets.
Hugely popular with fans for his whole-hearted approach and winning personality, he was a key member of the 2005 Ashes-winning side.
However, his career has been blighted by injury and he has missed more than 20 Tests over the last three years. He had four separate operations on his ankle between 2005 and 2007 and has problems with his hip, groin, shoulder and back.

Match 2: West Indies Vs India

June 28, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Cricket News No Comments →

After surviving through a narrow 20-run win over the West Indies, India go into the second ODI on Sunday. India need to be fully aware that they need to maintain their intensity right through the game to take an invincible 2-0 lead.
The close game will serve as a wake-up call for the visitors who are determined to make amends for their Twenty20 World Cup debacle by clinching the four-match series.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni has already warned his team-mates not to get contented and it remains to be been seen how the Indians respond to their captain who finds himself under some pressure.
With the dashing Virender Sehwag not available for the series, the Indians have struggled to get the starts though new opener Dinesh Karthik did well by scoring 67.
The left-handed Gautam Gambhir has not been in good form for some time now and the Delhi batsman will be keen to rediscover his touch.
Yuvraj Singh, who smashed 131 in the first match, has been in excellent form and will have to shoulder the responsibility of taking India to a healthy total.
Bowling in the slog overs continued to remain an area of concern for India as home side was in the game till the end despite the tourists removing seven wickets in 40 overs. They conceded 29 runs in extras.
In Dhoni’s own words, giving pacer Ashish Nehra the ball in the closing stage was a gamble which paid off.
“It was a gamble. We were thinking of giving that over to an off-spinner or a pacer. Finally, we chose a pacer as the ball was getting reverse swing,” he said.
Dhoni also admitted they had to toil hard to defend their mammoth 340-run target because his team-mates got complacent after removing the top-order of the West Indies.
West Indies, who were brave in their chase despite losing wickets at regular intervals, will surely look to bounce back to draw parity in the series.
They needed one batsman to play a big innings like Yuvraj had done for the Indians and the others could play the supporting role.
That their bowlers let India recover to set such a massive target after twice applying break to their run-spree shows they needed to buckle up too. The West Indies’ bowling appeared indisciplined as they did not maintain the right line and length on the slow track.
Skipper Chris Gayle confessed his batsmen failed to capitalise on the good start.
Squads:
India: Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir, Rohit Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, Pragyan Ojha, Yusuf Pathan, Murali Vijay, Subramaniam Badrinath, Rudra Pratap Singh, Praveen Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Abhishek Nayar, Ashish Nehra, Ravindra Jadeja, Dinesh Karthik.
West Indies: Chris Gayle, Denesh Ramdin, Lionel Baker, Darren Bravo, Dwayne Bravo, Sulieman Benn, David Bernard Jr, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Narsingh Deonarine, Runako Morton, Ravi Rampaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Jerome Taylor.

Sri Lanka have set the pace throughout the Twenty20 World Cup with both bat and ball and have not lost a match.
Pakistan, desperately short of practice, were outplayed by England in their opening match but rallied remarkably to thrash New Zealand and then upset a confident, well-drilled South African team in Thursday’s semi-final.
Both sides have exhibited the imagination and technical expertise which have made the tournament so memorable with the latest form of the game evolving and changing daily before noisy sell-out crowds at Lord’s, the Oval and Trent Bridge.
Sri Lanka will start favourites by virtue of their consistency and strength in depth.

India’s Probables for World T20

April 05, 2009 By: Spunky Category: Champions Trophy 2009 No Comments →

In the absence of the domestic Twenty20 tournament, which was postponed for the second year in a row, performance in the IPL will be crucial for the 30 players selected in India’s preliminary World Twenty20 squad for the tournament in England.

The notable omissions were Sreesanth, Joginder Sharma, Ajit Agarkar and Piyush Chawla, who were part of the team that won the World Twenty20 in 2007.

The final squad of 15 to 16 players will be announced a month before the tournament begins on June 5.

The IPL assumes significance because it ends on May 24, leaving little time for a camp before the players leave for England.

Sreesanth ruled himself out of the IPL due to a back injury and had recently admitted he would be out of action for at least three months.

The selectors had always been skeptical once he struggled on his return to domestic cricket after sustaining an injury during last season’s IPL.

There were no specific parameters that the selectors looked at when they prepared the 30-man short list.

The list contains no surprises with most players picking themselves due to their form in the current season.

Tamil Nadu offspinner R Ashwin was picked as a back-up to Harbhajan Singh after a successful domestic season where he was the leading wicket-taker in Challenger Trophy (eight wickets) and took two more in three Deodhar Trophy games.

Squad: Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Yuvraj Singh, Yusuf Pathan, Irfan Pathan, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Munaf Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, Pragyan Ojha, Harbhajan singh, Praveen Kumar, Dinesh Karthik, M Vijay, Ajinkya Rahane, S Badrinath, Robin Uthappa, Virat Kohli, Manoj Tiwary, Wriddhiman Saha, Abhishek Nayar, Amit Mishra, R Ashwin, RP Singh, L Balaji, Dhawal Kulkarni, Naman Ojha.

Modi confirms SA as IPL 2 Venue

March 25, 2009 By: Spunky Category: IPL 2010 - IPL 3 No Comments →

South Africa will host the second edition of the multi-billion dollar Indian Premier League (IPL) from April 18 at six venues.

The IPL Twenty20 championship will be played at Durban, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Pretoria, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth.

With South Africa saying yes to IPL, League Commissioner and Chairman Lalit Modi’s search for a country to host the second edition of the Twenty20 championship is finally over.

The 59 matches of the IPL will be played in the six stadiums across the country at 1600 hrs IST and 2000 hrs IST.

Modi met Cricket South Africa CEO Gerald Majola at an undisclosed venue to discuss the possibility of hosting the second edition of the Twenty20 event here. And after the meeting, sources told CNN-IBN that the deal was sealed to host the league in South Africa.

South Africa says there will be no trouble staging the League and has assured full security. Cricket South Africa, it is reported, has also offered full support to the IPL.

According to the original schedule, the IPL was to kick off from April 10 but it is being reported that the reason for postponing the tournament is to give the Indian players a breather. India will be finishing their current tour of New Zealand on April 7.

IPL Venue move to U.K. or South Africa

March 22, 2009 By: Spunky Category: IPL 2010 - IPL 3 No Comments →

India’s Indian Premier League(IPL) matches may be moved to the U.K. or South Africa to avoid domestic security concerns, the Press reported, without saying where it got the information.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) took the decision to relocate the 45-day twenty20 tournament overseas after authorities said they couldn’t guarantee security because the event clashes with national elections.

India earlier this month asked the Indian Premier League to redraw its cricket match schedule because of fears over safety as it coincided with the national and state elections. The tournament runs from April 10-May 24, while elections will be held between April 16-May 13.

The Indian Premier League tournament is estimated to be worth about 100 billion rupees ($1.97 billion) in television broadcast rights and sponsorships.
